iPad Accessories to Jumpstart the iPad

iPad accessories should be purchased in tandem with the iPad if you want to get the most out of your iPad. There are several accessories that Apple sells directly with the iPad that they want you to purchase. Otherwise, they would leave it up to third-party vendors to make the accessories that would enhance your iPad. However, just like Apple offers certain applications to the iPad itself, and doesn’t leave everything up to the application store, there are certain accessories that Apple believes are essential to your iPad use.

One of the most essential accessories for your iPad is the keyboard dock. This will charge your iPad and function as a working keyboard at the same time. However, if you want a keyboard that is as portable and mobile as the iPad itself, they also offer a wireless keyboard. However, users should be aware that the wireless keyboard will have some connectivity problems most likely at some point. Typing on your iPad is essential for people that want to do work on their iPad instead of just being stuck viewing media content. Make no mistake, the iPad is a great productivity device if you use the accessories to enhance its office experience.

Another accessory that you should purchase is the iPad case. While there are other cases that are out there that do just as well protecting the iPad, there are known that are so uniquely tailored to the iPad as the iPad case itself. It is sleek, chic, simple, and black. It can be folded over to prop up your iPad and view it from an angle so you can see the media content better without holding it in your hand the whole time you are viewing some media content. Other iPad cases simply don’t have the feature of keeping your iPad propped up when you are reading it. They merely protect the external shell, possibly the screen, and maybe the edges, but they don’t prop it up as well.

Another leading accessory is the camera connection kit. This camera connection kit does what it says and connects your digital camera to your iPad. You can then upload all the photos to the iPad and view them on this beautiful media display device. Without a camera connection kit, it can be hard to view the content of your photographs without going through the web first. This device is simply essential for photographers. Photographers that don’t purchase the camera connection kit will have to go through their computer first and then their photographs can be downloaded to the iPad. That simply takes too much time.

Another device is the USB power adapter. This wonderful small device charges your iPad better than a computer. It is faster, stronger, and easier than charging your iPad through a computer.

Obviously, Apple saw the need for all these products when they set out to design the iPad. They wanted people to use it for multiple uses and not just for the intended purposes that came along with the iPad when it was first ready to use right out of the box. The iPad is a multi-purpose device, and it should be used as such. Don’t neglect to purchase all the accessories for the iPad so that you can use it in any situation imaginable.

Furthermore, it is probably a good idea to purchase AppleCare with your product because it is the first generation of the device and may have some problems that come along with it. AppleCare extends the warranty of your Apple product for up to 3 years. This unique service is what makes Apple such a great company and ensures that your iPad will work for many years, and in many different situations too.

Apple?s challenge

Jobs emphasis on design and research is a template for creative and cultural sector

Steve Jobs resignation as Apple’s chief executive has prompted volumes of coverage and has been on news bulletins internationally across all media today.

For some time Jobs has been a talismanic figure at the company, particularly since his return in 1996 to the firm after an eleven year absence. In the intervening years he had taken the not insignificant step of being a co-founder of Pixar Studios.

Apple’s share price and future profits are portrayed as being linked in an immediate sense to Jobs, though he is not the creator or designer of many of Apple’s key products. “Without Its Master of Design, Apple Will Face Many Challenges” is the headline of one New York Times article, while the Irish Times reports that “Move opens door for rivals”.

There is no doubt about the role that Jobs has played at Apple or the impact he has made.

However is one person the sum of Apple’s output? Can you name the chief executive of Samsung or the designers who produced the HTC range of smart phones. Didn’t think you could, yet a significant amount of us buy their products.

Sometimes we are too ready to create symbolic figureheads and portray them as being business superheroes. Apple is a huge organisation and has made a multi billion dollar investment in designing new products. Individual leadership decisions are critical but a lot more is happening at the company than the work of Steve Jobs.

How firms in the creative and cultural sectors are organised and run is a critical part of communications and media studies as is the importance of design. Organisation theory and behaviour is a feature of undergraduate modules on the business degrees in Griffith College.

It is also part of the media and photography programmes and appears in modules such as Media Marketing, Newspaper and Magazine Production, Business Journalism and Radio Journalism.

Collaborative work is a key feature of media production. We needs leaders, but an effective team is vitally important.

The other aspect of the Jobs legacy is the significance of investment in design and research. In Ireland as we seek at an individual and national level to rebuild the economy these two factors are critical.

Investing in research, innovation and new design alongside the creative output of new artistic, cultural and media products is a necessary part of a realistic economic strategy for the coming years.

How To Synchronize Apple iPad 2

If you want to synchronize your Apple iPad 2 so you can put some music or videos from your PC, you are at the right place. Read carefully and follow the instructions how to synchronize your Apple iPad 2 and PC.

You have a couple ways to make the connection:

USB cable. Use the cable that comes with your iPad to attach the USB connector to a free USB port on your Mac or Windows PC, and then attach the dock connector to the 30-pin connector port on the bottom of the iPad.
Dock. If you shelled out the bucks for an optional iPad dock (a regular dock or a keyboard dock), first plug it in to a power outlet. Using your iPad’s cable, attach the USB connector to a free USB port on your Mac or Windows PC, and attach the dock connector to the 30-pin connector port on the back of the dock. Now insert your Apple iPad into the dock’s cradle.

Synchronizing Your iPad Automatically

Depending on the storage capacity of your iPad – 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB – you may be able to transfer all your computer’s iPad – friendly digital content onto the iPad hard drive. If that sounds like the way you want to go, then you can take advantage of the easiest of the iPad synchronizing scenarios, in which you don’t have to pay any attention in the least: automatic synchronization. Because you know all the iPad – able content on your Mac or Windows PC is going to fit, all you have to do is turn on your iPad 2 and connect it to your computer.

iTunes opens automatically, connects to your Apple iPad 2, and begins synchronizing. And just for your information, the USB port also begins charging your iPad’s battery.

Note that you can’t use your iPad while the synchronization is running. However, one of the iPad’s nicest features is that you can interrupt synchronization. When the Sync in Progress screen appears, you see the Slide to Cancel slider at the bottom of the screen. If you ever need to bail out of the synchronization to perform some other duty, drag the slider to the right. iTunes cancels the synchronization so you can go about your business. When you’re ready to restart the synchronization, click the Sync button in iTunes.

When the synchronization is done, you need to do two things:

In iTunes, click the Eject icon beside your iPad in the Devices list.
Remove the dock connector from the iPad’s 30-pin connector port.

Bypassing the automatic synchronization

Sometimes, you may want to connect your iPad to your computer, but you don’t want it to synchronization automatically. For example, you may want to connect your iPad to your computer just to charge it. Or perhaps you just want to use iTunes to check how much free space is left on your iPad 2 or to check for updates to the iPad software.

Whatever the reason, you can tell iTunes to hold off the synchronizing this time only by using one of the following techniques:

Mac. Connect the iPad to the Mac, and then quickly press and hold the Option and Mac keys
Windows. Connect the iPad to the Windows PC, and then quickly press and hold the Control and Shift keys.

When you see that iTunes has added your iPad to the Devices list, you can release the keys. Note, however, that you don’t need to use iTunes to see how much free space is left on your iPad. On the Home screen, tap Settings, tap General, and then tap About. In the About screen that slides in, the Available value tells you how many gigabytes (or megabytes) of free space you have to play with.

Troubleshooting automatic synchronization

So, you connect your iPad to your computer and then nothing. If iTunes isn’t already running, it refuses to wake up from its. What’s up with that?

A couple things could be the problem. First, connect your iPad 2, switch to iTunes on your computer, and then click your iPad 2 in the Devices list. On the Summary tab, make sure the Open iTunes when this iPad is connected check box is selected.

If that check box was already selected, you need to delve a bit deeper to solve the mystery. Follow these steps:

Open the iTunes preferences:
Mac. Choose iTunes > Preferences
Windows. Choose Edit > Preferences
Click the Devices tab.
Deselect the Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from Syncing Automatically check box.
Click OK to put the new setting into effect and enable automatic syncing again.

Syncing Your iPad Manually When you first connected your iPad to iTunes, the brief setup routine included a screen that asked if you wanted to automatically synchronize certain content, such as music and photos. If you activated a check box for a particular type of content, iTunes configure the iPad to synchronize all of that content.

One fine day, you’ll be minding your own business and performing what you believe to be a routine synchronization operation when a dialog box pops up telling you iPad 2 is out of hard disk space. You can handle this in a couple of ways:

Remove some of the content from your computer. This is a good way to go if your iPad 2 is really close to having enough space. For example, the dialog says your computer wants to send 100MB of data, but your Apple iPad 2 has only 98MB of free space. Get rid of a few megabytes of stuff on your computer, and you’re back in the synchronization business.
Synchronize your iPad manually. This means that you no longer synchronize everything on your computer. Instead, you hand-pick which play-lists, podcasts, audio books, and so on are sent to your iPad. It’s a bit more work, but it’s the way to go if there’s a big difference between the amount of content on your computer and the amount of space left on your iPad.

Synchronizing manually means that you handle the synchronization yourself for the various content types: contacts, calendars, e-mail, bookmarks, music, podcasts, audio books, e-Books, photos, videos, and apps. You do this using the other tabs in the iPad window: Info, Music, Photos, and so on.

Removing data from your iPad 2 and replacing it with fresh info

After you know what you’re doing, synchronizing contacts, calendars, e-mail accounts, and bookmarks to your iPad 2 is a relatively bulletproof procedure that should happen without a hitch each time. Of course, this is technology you’re dealing with here, so hitches do happen every now and then, and as a result you might end up with corrupt or repeated information on your iPad.

Or perhaps you’ve been synchronizing your iPad with a couple of different computers, and you decide to cut one of the computers out of the loop and revert to just a single machine for all your synchronization.

In both these scenarios, you need to replace the existing information on your Apple iPad 2 with a freshly baked batch of data. Fortunately, iTunes has a feature that lets you do exactly that. Here’s how it works:

Connect your iPad to your computer.
In the iTunes Devices list, click the iPad.
Click the Info tab.
Select the Sync check boxes for each type of information you want to work with (contacts, calendars, e-mail accounts, bookmarks, or notes).
In the Advanced section, select the check box beside each type of information you want to replace.
Click Apply. iTunes replaces the selected information on your iPad.

My 12 Favorite Apps for the iPad – January 2011 Edition

Every few days I am asked what are the best apps for the iPad and what my iPad favorite apps are. In fact, last May, I wrote about My 12 Favorite iPad Apps where I called out 12 of the best apps for iPad so I thought I’d revisit the list to see if my favorites have changed. As expected, my top apps for iPad have evolved over time. For example, only three of the twelve iPad apps have remained on my list for best apps for iPad including Kindle, Zinio and Mail.

#12 Starting at #12, iBooks makes the best iPad app list. The one and only reason iBooks made my iPad apps favorite list is because iBooks provides an excellent interface to store and read PDFs.

Having used several PDF readers including the popular GoodReader for the iPad, I prefer the way iBooks stores the PDFs showing the PDFs cover in the library view and the ability to sync via iTunes or attached to an email that you open and send to the iBooks app and these features make iBooks one of the best apps on iPad.

There are a few features in iBooks I don’t use including the fact iBooks provides access to Apple’s iBookstore which allows you to download and read the latest books and classics. Additionally you can make notes and highlight passages in your eBook and use AirPrint to print the PDF with your notes included.

#11 My next best app for iPad and latest obsession/time sink is Words for Friends HD. If you have not heard of Word for Friends, you must be the only one! Words with Friends HD is a crossword game (think Scrabble) that is socially played against friends with a NewToy Inc account. While there is an iPhone app for Words with Friends, the larger screen of the iPad allows better vision across the entire board allowing me to smoke my foes!

#10 The iPad app on my iPad favorite apps list is one of the best iPad apps for kids available and my four year old daughter’s favorite iPad app. DressUpBaby provides an intuitive and simple interface for my four year old daughter using cute characters and funky clothes and accessories. I randomly receive outfits emailed from my daughter using the camera function on one of her top apps for iPad.

#9 Next on my list of iPad best apps is also one of my iPad productivity apps. Remoter is a VNC (Virtual Network Computing) client for the iPad that provides the ability to virtually control your desktop over the network from your iPad. I’ve used the client to control both Windows and Mac machines, but VNC will also work with various UNIX flavors. This app has saved me too many times while I’m out but needed something from work making this one of my best iPad apps.

#8 Whistle turns my iPad into a networked conference phone making this app high on my best apps for iPad. I use Whistle as a client for an Asterix PBX, a 3rd party SIP service) that allows me to make a call from the “office” anywhere that I have an Internet connection. Whistle provides integration with my Contacts (which is synced with Google’s cloud) and with the latest iOS loaded I can continue Whistle calls in the background as I continue to use the iPad. Speakerphone works amazingly, but Whistle also supports the Apple Headphones allowing you to answer calls with the center button. This app enables business and is one of my top productivity apps for iPad providing a business tool to work virtually.

#7 Kindle constantly makes everyone’s best iPad apps list and is no exception for the Geeks favorite apps for iPad. The Kindle app provides an easy to use interface and provides access to Amazon’s Whispersync service to automatically sync your last page read, bookmarks, notes and highlights across your Kindle devices. The Amazon Kindle store provides over 800K eBooks at the same price or better than other eBook retailers.

#6 Next on my best apps for the iPad list, Toodledo provides access to my cloud-based task manager service and provides easy access to my to do list. Apple ranked Toodledo in the top 30 paid iPad apps of all time, and in the top 200 for iPhone – Jan 2011 and is one of my favorite iPad apps and one of my top productivity apps for iPad.

#5 Evernote is another cloud-based note service that is one of my top productivity apps for iPad and one of the best apps for iPad. The Evernote iPad app provides my primary interface to take and view notes, including voice notes, while I’m not in my home office. Evernote then automatically syncs with the cloud-based service so you can view the notes on the iPad, one of the desktop Evernote applications, or the web. The Evernote app was inducted into the Apple “App Hall of Fame”, on the NY Times “Top 10 Must-Have Apps” list and has been the winner of the Best Mobile App Award from TechCrunch, Mashable and the Webbys and, in my opinion, one of the best apps on iPad.

#4 One of the included apps, the Calendar app, is one of my most used and therefore one of my iPad favorite apps. The Calendar iPad App is laid out well and keeps my schedule straight by syncing with Google’s cloud-based calendar service.

#3 If you subscribe to Netflix, you should have one of the best iPad apps available to access the service with the Netflix app. The app provides access to your Netflix account to instantly watch TV shows and movies streaming from Netflix as part of your Netflix unlimited membership. I use this app almost nightly to watch TV shows and is one of the best apps on iPad.

#2 Zinio is one of my favorite apps for iPad and using Zinio I receive all my magazine digitally instead in the mail as the Zinio iPad app provides thousands of magazine titles with special interactive and graphical features synced directly to your iPad. I started using Zinio over 5 years ago, and those archived magazines are available through the Zinio app!

#1 Ever since getting the iPad, I’ve used the device as my primary means of obtaining most of my work and all of my personal email using the included Mail App and therefore, Mail is my best iPad app. The interface is great for a tablet and thanks to the portable nature of the device, the Mail App helps maintain my quest to maintain a zero inbox.

iPad and iPad 2 – Apple Takes One More Step Further

Update (Tuesday, March 15, 2011): iPad 2 Sales Soaring

iPad 2 sales have been sky-rocketing. Apple sold close to, or over 500,000 iPad 2s last weekend. It’s reported that in many cities several retailers like Best Buy, Target and Walmart ran out of stock on the very first day of the launch.

Sources claim a sale of 400,000 to 500,000 iPad 2s as compared to 300,000 of the original iPads in its first weekend. There appears to be a large number of sales made to first time owners of iPad.

iPad 2 retailers should be replenishing the tablet stock this week. Buyers also have the option of ordering online through the Apple or the AT&T site. However this involves a waiting period of 3-4 weeks for Apple and 2-3 weeks for AT&T before shipping the product out.

Apple takes one more step further with the launch of iPad 2

Apple has always been known for introducing products with out-of-the-ordinary designs and innovative features that have never failed to take the consumer market by storm. Years ago this started with the iPod revolution. Today iPod with its several designs and models has been a must-have possession for music lovers. Then came iPhone which was akin to having a mini-computer with a phone in your pocket. With its sleek design and features and increasing popularity, it soon proved to be a phone that everyone was proud to flaunt.

The launch of iPad

Apple did not stop at that and the market saw the advent of Apple’s popular touchscreen tablet device, the iPad, which went on sale in April of last year. The aesthetics and the ease-of-use of iPad was worth raving about. Though there was a section of the consumer market that was apprehensive of the usability of the tablet and called it merely a status symbol, people gradually starting to appreciate the ease-of-use, portability and convenience it brought whether you had to surf the internet, check emails, use it as a music jukebox or for document processing and file-management.

It soon gained popularity amongst students who preferred studying their notes from the iPad. It’s longer-than laptop battery life and light-weightedness made it popular amongst those who are frequently on the go. Right now at the App Store, there are thousands of apps available to download that open a whole new world of features to the iPad. iPad apps are expanding the learning experience both inside and outside the classroom. From interactive lessons to study aids to productivity tools, there’s something for everyone. iBooks on iPad has introduced a novel way to buy and read books.

The world of business apps for iPad will transform the way you work. On iPad, you can review and edit common office documents such as Microsoft Office and iWork files. You can also create beautiful presentations from scratch, craft complex spreadsheets, annotate PDFs, and access important files on your corporate network.

The increasing popularity was clearly evident from the iPad sales which shot to 7.46 million by September 2010, which was just 6 months after its launch. Reports say that the last 3 months of 2010 saw an additional sale of 7.33 million iPads.

Though Apple’s Steve Jobs introduced the iPad as a device that would occupy the world between smart phones and laptops, potential customers weren’t convinced because of certain missing and expected features. To mitigate these gaps, Apple unveiled the iPad 2 on March 2. The long anticipated iPad2 will debut the market on March 11, 2011. The iPad 2 has also been rumored to be called “iPad HD”.

Here are some of the upgrades to the iPad2 in comparison to the original iPad:

Faster Processor with great graphicsiPad2 has 2 core processors (dual-core) in one A5 chip. This is an upgrade to the A4 processor in the original iPad. You’ll notice the difference when you’re surfing the web, watching movies, making FaceTime video calls, gaming, and switching from app to app. Multitasking is smoother, apps load faster, and everything just works better.

With up to nine times the graphics performance, playing games on iPad is even faster, smoother and more realistic. Even with the sleeker design and higher power, Apple claims the battery life will still stay the same amazing 10 hours.

FaceTime again with two camerasiPad2 has 2 cameras – one on the front and one on the back. The Apple fans got a taste of FaceTime with the launch of iPhone 4. It has been gaining so much popularity lately that iPad2 has decided to add the FaceTime functionality to the iPad2 through the two cameras. The front camera puts you and your friend face-to-face. Switch to the back camera during your video call to share where you are, who you’re with, or what’s going on around you. When you’re not using FaceTime, let the back camera roll if you see something movie-worthy. It’s HD, so whatever you shoot is a mini-masterpiece.

More variety with Two ColorsiPad2 is available in both black and white whereas the original iPad was only available in black.

Lighter and Thinner in your handsApple promises to deliver what it advertises about iPad being ‘Less in your hands, More at your fingertips’.iPad2 will really make you feel the difference when you hold it your hands. iPad2 is up to 15% lighter than the original iPad. The iPad2′s WiFi-only model weighs about 1.3 pounds. The lighter weight could mean a lot for those always on the go and for those who like to carry their iPad around like any other book.

Apple is known to give a lot of importance on the sleekness and thinness of their gadgets. iPad2 is 33% thinner than the original iPad. It is 0.34 inch (8.8 mm) thin.

Introducing the iPad Smart CoverThe iPad Smart Cover protects your iPad without adding bulk to its thin, light design. It works with iPad such that the smart magnetic technology built into each really pulls them together. Open the Smart Cover and your iPad wakes up instantly. Close it and your iPad goes to sleep automatically. The smart cover also acts as a perfect stand for the iPad when you are watching movies or playing games.

The above lists only the major visible upgrades. There is much more in store including the gyroscope, accelerometer, compass, HDMI out and the features supported by the new operating system iOS 4.3

Undoubtedly, iPad2 will prove to be incredible technology under your fingers. It definitely is up to an individual whether he would like to invest in iPad2 after having invested in the original iPad. One would think pricing and affordability would be a concern here, but history has it that Apple has its strategies well-thought of, be it design, development or marketing. The release and sales of the several upgraded versions of iPod and iPhone are excellent examples. It is rumored, that the new targets for 2011 is that Apple will ship up to 4 million iPad2 per month, reaching a total of 40 million iPads for 2011. And despite competition from big brand vendors like Samsung, Motorola and more, analysts predict that iPad2 will continue the Apple’s tablet dominance in the market.

Latest on the iPad2

So the latest for those waiting to possess the iPad2 is that it goes on sale Friday March 11 at 5PM and two weeks later in 26 other countries. Unfortunately, Apple is not taking pre-orders for their second generation iPad. Reports reason that when pre-orders began for the Verizon iPhone, there were so many pre-orders that it took both the Verizon and Apple online stores down within two hours. Though the sales were enormous, the reality lines were short at Verizon stores since most people pre-ordered online. Apple does not want this to happen again. Apple wants long lines for iPad2 which would provide better advertising for a major Apple product release. March 11 would see many who owned the original iPad upgrading to the newer model, while many others who didn’t get the first generation iPad buying their first iPad.

History Of Apple Trees

Apple trees were the most popularly grown fruit tree in colonial America and practically every settlement farm and backyard gardener planted this easily grown fruit tree, or easier, the seed of the apple could be planted to establish a permanent food supply. Growing these apple tree products could be eaten fresh or could be dried and preserved in many different ways to eat at a later time. Historical instances on the existence of apple trees are documented from folklore, legends, stone images on carved tablets, petrified slices of apples on plates for tomb offerings, and overwhelming numbers of references from Hebrew Bible scriptures and innumerable writings from poetry, songs, literary publications, and many other surviving accounts of all civilizations in the ancient world. One of the earliest archaeological evidences of apple tree fruit comes from the remains of excavations from Jericho, Jordan, that has been dated 6500 BC by radiochemical analysis of carbon atoms.

The petrified remains of apple slices that were found in a saucer of an ancient Mesopotamian tomb, the burial site of royalty dates back to 2500 BC and was uncovered in southern Iran. In the ancient historical accounts of the fruit of the apple tree, there appears to be an incomprehensible trail of evidence that no other fruit could match. The interest shown in apples by the Greek and Roman philosophers, poets, historians, and literary masters was even extended to Renaissance painters, royal chefs to the Tsars of Russia and too many other references to mention.

In colonial America, apple trees were grown and planted from seeds in orchards by William Blackstone at Boston, Massachusetts in the 1600′s. Early documents on file at the National Library in Washington, DC suggest that all land owners in Massachusetts had begun growing apple trees by the 1640′s.

William Bartram, the famous explorer and botanist, wrote in his book, Travels, “I observed, in a very thriving condition, two or three large apple trees” in 1773, while traveling near Mobile, Alabama. It is important to realize that these large apple trees found growing in Alabama in 1773 could very easily have been grown from the seed planted by Creek Indians. Those seed may have been obtained by the Indians from American colonists on the Eastern coast of the United States at a much earlier time or from French farmers who settles in areas of agricultural land grants north of Mobile. General Oglethorpe planned in 1733 to plant “various plants, subtropical and temperate, which might prove valuable for Georgian farms and orchards,” according to William Bartram in his book Travels, published 40 years later. William Bartram’s father, John Bartram, trip to “East Florida” (Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas) was, in part at least, an attempt to inventory the plant resources of England’s new acquisition-after expelling the Spanish from East Florida.

Many modern botanists believe that the improved apple that we know today descended from the crabapple that is commonly interplanted with apple trees for cross pollination. Old documents record that fact “cultivated apples descended from crab-tree or wild apple-Pyrus malus.” Wild crabapple tree seeds appeared on the list of collected seeds in the Plant List of 1783 of William Bartram and his father, John Bartram. In William Bartram’s book, Travels in 1773, he “observed amongst them (fruit trees) the wild crab (Pyrus coronaria) in his explorations near Mobile, Alabama. Robert Prince established the first operating nursery in the American colonies at Flushing, New York, in the 1700′s, where he offered apple trees for sale at his nursery that was visited by General George Washington, who later became the first President of the United States. President Thomas Jefferson was planting and growing apple trees at his fruit tree orchard in Monticello, Virginia, in the early 1800′s.

The legendary Johnny Appleseed was responsible for the rapid development of the apple trees growing and planting when he established a nursery in the Midwest that sold both apple trees and seed to be planted for growing into trees in the 1800′s. Over 2000 cultivars of apple trees are listed as being grown today, many of the trees resulting from the huge apple seed dispersion that was begun by the memorable ambition of Johnny Appleseed to entirely cover the landscape of America with the fruit of apple trees.

Over the centuries, apple trees became susceptible to many disease problems such as fire blight; however, Dr. C.S. Crandall from the University of Illinois performed several backcrosses that involved modern cultivars and the apple tree ancestor ‘crabapple,’ Malus floribunda. The wild crabapple contained an immunity factor within its genetic composition towards all major bacterial and fungal diseases of apple trees. In 1989, researchers from the pomology department at Cornell University extracted an immune fire blight gene from a nocturnal moth and transplanted it into an apple fruit, resulting in the total defeat of fire blight in that particular apple tree cultivar.

Fruiting of apple trees is perhaps the most troublesome characteristic experienced by an orchardist or a backyard fruit tree gardener. Most cultivars of apple trees require cross pollination of two separate varieties in order to set fruit on the tree.

It is necessary that the blossoms of the two apple tree flowers develop pollen at the same time, in order that fruit will be set, which can be a tricky problem to correct. The simplist solution to pollinate apple trees is to use the ancestor of the modern day apple cultivars, the crabapple, which sheds its pollen over a long period of time and easily overlaps the apple tree cultivar flowering period. Crabapple trees produce a fruit that is much smaller than the common apple, but it can be used in cooking in various ways, and it is loved by wildlife in the fall and winter when wildlife food is scarce for animals and birds. Crabapple trees are also valuable when used as flowering trees that begin blooming in early spring with huge clusters of pink, white, and even red blossoms. Several outstanding grafted flowering tree selections are available, such as: Brandywine, Red Perfection, Radiant, and Spring Snow.

Apple trees are easy to grow, and if a gardener purchases a large tree, he may experience fruit development even on the first year of planting and growing. The selection of the proper cultivar of grafted apple trees is extremely important, because even though the apple fruit can be grown in most areas of the United States, the trees require different amounts of chilling temperatures in order to flower. The interesting introduction of low chill cultivars from Israel makes it possible to experience apple growing and planting as far south as Florida. Certain popularly grown cultivars of apple trees in the United States today are: Arkansas Black, Gala, Granny Smith, Red Rome, Anna, Red Fuji, Yates, Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Anna, Ein Shemer, and Golden Dorsett. Apples contain some mysterious quality that can preserve it from deterioration for centuries. Apple slices can be dried and kept delicious for long periods of time. This mysterious characteristic may be recognized by man’s association of paradise being connected and related to Eve and Adam picking apples from a fruit tree growing in paradise for their eternal pleasure, that was planted by God and described as the tree of life at the fabled Garden of Eden. We see this fruit of paradise recurs in the history of many other ancient civilizations. A similar account that we read as children in the book of Genesis from the scriptures in the Hebrew Bible.

Perhaps this mysterious genetic quality of apples in preservation makes it so important as providing medical benefits backed up by that memorable proverb, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Experiments from researchers in California have shown that apple fruit is very rich in antioxidants, a biological compound that combats, stroke, heart disease, and many other health problems.

Beschaffung finanzieller Mittel (Verfgungsgewalt ber Geld = Kapital).
